Welcome to Oxford Jitsu Club
Jitsu is a martial art. Jiu Jitsu
(meaning gentle art) originated and developed in medieval
Japan. We
still use Japanese names and terminology for many of our techniques.
The style of Jiu Jitsu taught by the Jitsu Foundation is called
Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu.
How does Jitsu Work?
Jitsu works by
either escaping, locking up (restraining) an attacker or by throwing
them to the floor with force. If a weapon is involved, it can be
disarmed and in some cases used for self-protection against any further
attackers. Jitsu allows for a wide range of responses to threats, so
that a minor violation of your personal space does not have to be dealt
with using a near-lethal technique.
Oxford
Jitsu Club is a martial arts club that teaches real-life self defence
in a safe, friendly environment. The club is run as a not for profit
organisation by committee members to provide teaching in the style of
Jui Jitsu (also known as JuJitsu or Ju Jutsu) practised by The Jitsu
Foundation.
You will be
taught practical techniques for defending against armed and unarmed
attackers without relying on strength or weight advantage. By learning
Jiu-Jitsu, you will also improve fitness and stamina and gain increased
confidence.
Classes are open to
everyone regardless of ability, and no previous martial arts experience
is necessary. Beginners are always welcome and the best way to find out
what Jitsu is all about is to come and have a go.Your
first session is free, so just turn up in some loose
clothing with a keen attitude.
At
present, the club does not have a junior session, so you need to be
over 18 to train. However, we are looking at opening a junior session,
so if you are interested please let us know.
Your
first session:
Please arrive a
little early as there is a little admin to complete
before your first session. Wear clean clothes that you can move in
easily without buckles or embellishments that could injure you or those
you are training with e.g. a t-shirt and track suit trousers. If you
already own a gi (martial arts uniform) you are welcome to wear it but
please bring a white belt or borrow one of ours.
Find out more about where
we train and how to join.
